Real Trail?

Day 50 – 5/2/16
20.4 map / 25.3 GPS miles
741.9/ 803.7 miles total

Today was rough on morale. We figured since we were on real trail, hitting a low to mid 20 mile day should be no problem. By lunch we only had 7.8 miles done.

Colorado river in the morning
long uphill

It was just lots of uneven, rocky ground going up and down cliffs, with a bunch of scrambling thrown. It felt very Hayduke, but not very NPS.

yep, we’re dropping into that canyon from exactly where Bubs is standing
walking down a cool canyon
this is NPS “trail”?!
At lunchtime we looked over the maps again. Perhaps our plans, formed last night, to get into the South Rim tomorrow night were unrealistic. Damn, I’d already started getting into what I thought were “extra” bars.

highlight of the day, sheepy!

The last of the clouds finally cleared out and the afternoon was so hot and humid. I drank a ton of water and sweat to the point of developing both armpit and butt chafe.

lovely afternoon

But the hiking did go better. The trail mellowed out into nice contouring with relatively good tread. We got some delicious non-Colorado water and hiked a bit later than Joey would have liked. Tomorrow we are going to get up early and still try to make the 21 miles into the South Rim!
