Cottonwood Peak

Day 111 – 8/11/13 – 26.8 mi (2007.5)

LoveNote and Burly Whites didn’t make it to camp last night, so we followed Amendment 1 of the Rules of the Trail and left a note. Ninja Sweetfish and I hiked together the rest of the day.

The trail was similarly tough, but it felt better. We use maps created by Jonathan Ley, a guy who hiked back in 2001 but kindly continues to update the maps every year. He often shows alternate routes, some scenic, some shortcuts. There were several spots today where he pointed out possible shortcuts, such as a ~3 mile route around a mountain that you can get to in less than 1 mile by going cross country down a drainage.

Another didn’t save any mileage, but avoided a big elevation loss and gain. We love these shortcuts. They make us feel giddy, like we’ve outsmarted the CDT.

The day ended with more up and down ridge walking along the divide.
