Bison Bone Cave

Day 110 – 8/10/13 – 25.8 mi (1980.7)

Today’s miles are well earned. Montaho (Montana-Idaho) really loves to put the CDT on the true continental divide. This means lots of ups and downs. About half the time there isn’t actual trail, just walking cross country over lumpy ground and sagebrush. About half of that time, there are posts, which look just like the ubiquitous barbed wire fence posts, spaced every quarter mile or so to follow. It’s tiring.

The weather and views were pleasant all day. I walked with Ninja most of the day. In the early evening we made a slight detour to visit a limestone cave mentioned on our maps. It’s a vertical shaft with a bunch of bison bones in the bottom. Supposedly the cave gets bridged over with snow and the unknowing bison fall in and die. It was underwhelming. There weren’t all that many bones, and I think it’s quite likely some dumb cows just fell in, snow or no snow. Oh well, it was still worth seeing and added some fun to the day.

Sweetfish, Ninia and I are camped in a cow field, seperated from the actual cows by a barbed wire fence. LoveNote was having a tough day so she and Burly are a bit behind tonight.
