Dumplings

Day 36 – 5/28/13 – 8.7mi (653.8)

Oh so many things to share today! First thing this morning, Beacon shuttled a bunch of us to the post office to pick up packages. I got my snow gear (ice axe, microspikes, down booties) and new shoes!!

And then the real highlight. Back in Pie Town, we ladies wrote Stryder’s mom a Mother’s Day card. We mostly told her how great her son is, but also strongly hinted that she send some of her famous apple dumplings to us in Chama. Well lo and behold, she took us seriously! Postman Jim had stored the dumplings in his freezer and went home to fetch them.

Back at the hotel, Stryder heated up the dumplings and shared them with all of us. They were awesome!! We also enjoyed reading a letter from Momma Stryder. Thank you!!

On the way back from the post office, we saw the train that goes through Chama and Cumbres pass. Ninja was especially excited, as her dad is a train enthusiast. Ninja and Sweetfish both ended up deciding to stay a other night in Chama and take the train back to the pass tomorrow morning.

Our hero Beacon took the rest of us (Wired, LoveNote, Stryder and me) back to the trail. It was cold and very windy as we climbed up from the pass. Only a few miles into Colorado, the scenery has already changed dramatically.

We’re at over 11,000′ now, and will continue to stay high for a long time. There were some patches of snow today, and we are surely going to go through a lot more in the next few days.

It’s gonna be a cold night!
Stryder’s mom also sent homemade energy bars, which he’s eating for dessert in bed.

The Daily Ninjup Report
I’ll be unable to give updates on the Ninjups until Ninja catches up with me again, which will likely be in the next town, Pagosa Springs.
