Eunice

Day 115 – 8/15/13 – 26.9 mi (2080.3)

The trail was mostly pleasant today, with gentler climbs, usually good tread, and mostly in the trees, providing much appreciated shade.

We made it to water for lunch. This was not just any water, but Trail Creek near Lemhi Pass. This is source of the Missouri that the Lewis and Clark Expedition reached before portaging over the Bitterroot mountains. We all “bestrode” the creek, just as one of the expedition’s men had done in 1805. Even more exciting than the historical significnce of the site were the benches and pit toilets with hand sanitizer nearby.

After eating lunch and tanking up for 25 miles of hiking and dry camping, we continued on our way. Leaving Lemhi Pass, the trail went right through a small herd of cattle. As we approached, one cow stood uncharacteristically still. When we got close, she freaked out and we realized her front leg was caught in the cattle guard in the road. The poor thing was bleeding all over and hopelessly stuck. There was nothing we could do to help her ourselves but it was heartbreaking to watch her struggle. Sweetfish had cell service and was able to call 911. They took the information and said they would track down the rancher. We’re guessing they’ll have to put her down anyway, but hopefully she won’t have to suffer too much longer. We named her Eunice, after a creek a few miles away. Kinda put a damper on the afternoon.
