Music

Day 148 – 9/22/11 – 23 miles (2597)

I had trouble sleeping last night. I think it was excitement of finally being in Stehekin, the last PCT resupply point.
I had an excellent breakfast at the restaurant before boarding the bus back to the trail. The bus once again stopped at the bakery, but I didn’t even get out of my seat this time.
It was all uphill walking today, but not too steep, and we put in a good day despite the misty rain that fell most of the hiking hours. Looking over my maps tonight, I can’t believe how few pages are left. We’re so close!

Well past point of being sick of our own music, Roadrunner and I finally switched mp3 players today. I won’t comment on his musical tastes, but here are some thoughts on my own selections of music for the trail. Due to technical difficulties involving using Apple products on computers running Windows, I ended up hastily throwing 2GB of music on my iPhone a day before I left. It turns out this is not much music to last 5 months, and I did a pretty poor job of getting a good variety. I rarely listened to music in the beginning and never during the snowy Sierra, but as the miles became more monotonous further north, I found myself listening more often. Generally speaking, the faster the tempo and less depressing the lyrics, the better.

Good for hiking:
-Fats Waller
-The Strokes
-Pop/dance musif, like Lady Gaga. Unfortunately, after listening to more than just a few of these songs at a time I want to kill myself

Bad for hiking:
-Alison Krauss
-Jelly Roll Morton

Music I think I will never get tired of:
-Chris Thile
-Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli

Music I now hate:
-The Beatles. Yeah, I said it. I hate the Beatles.
