Elk Lake

Day 119 – 8/24/11 – 25 miles (1973)

Erik the Black’s PCT Atlas map/guidebooks are known by thru-hikers as “The Book of Lies” for their numerous and often egregious errors.

Yogi’s PCT guide, on the other hand, is generally taken as gospel. However, it also contains plenty of misinformation. For example, every @$?! Post Office we’ve been to has opened an hour later than the guidebook says. It also reports that the food at Elk Lake Resort is exorbitantly priced, with $10.50 milkshakes, and is not welcoming to hikers. Lies! The milkshakes are $6.50, and the staff treated us well. We ate a late breakfast, an early lunch, and finished with double scoops of ice cream which were a bit on the pricey side, but not out of line with all the other resorts we’ve passed.

And remember that promise of the end of the mosquitos? More lies!

An early evening thunderstorm leaves a lovely rainbow over one of the Sisters mountains.
