Lassen Bears

Day 93 – 7/29/11 – 27 miles (1381)

Delicious breakfasts unfortunately also mean late starts. We didn’t walk until 9:30am, but managed to get in a good day anyway, setting us up perfectly for the Hat Creek Rim tomorrow.

The highlight of today was meeting a momma bear with two cubs on the trail. I think they were just as startled as I was when I walked up on them. I stopped and made some noise, but it didn’t seem to phase them much. Ninja and Roadrunner were just behind me and when they arrived, joined in the noise making. The bears kept moving just slightly up the trail, so we kept up the loud talking until they finally swam across the lake outlet well away from the trail.

We are now out of Lassen National Park, and camped once again the Balls and Sunshine and their visiting family. We’ve been lucky to be hiking the same pace and benefiting from their kindness in sharing car campsites, complete with cold PBR.
