Last of the desert

Day 41 – 6/7/11 – 25 miles (631)

It was a cold night up around 6800 feet; I’m really looking forward to my new sleeping bag waiting at Kennedy Meadows. We left the forest for the last section of southern Californian exposed desert. Not bad hiking today, though the loose sandy portions of trail were tiring and tough on the feet. At one point I stopped to empty out about 1/4 cup of sand from each shoe. Tomorrow we have 20 miles left to the highway that could take us into Onyx or Lake Isabella. We haven’t decided what we’re going to do yet, but I suspect we’ll end up with milkshakes from Nelda’s.
